he Bengal pace duo of Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep bagged nine wickets between them as Rest of India defeated Jammu and Kashmir by a comfortable margin of 167 runs in Srinagar in the Irani Cup. J&K were bowled out for 111 in a chase of 279.
Incidentally, J&K were provided with a good start by Qamran Iqbal (32) and Shubham Khajuria. Qamran played in his customary style: a slew of boundaries juxtaposed with beats. Akash, who had a catch dropped off his bowling, eventually prised out Qamran with a nip-backer. Mukesh then sent back Shubham Pundir with a nip-backer of his own. Initially, the loud appeal for LBW was answered in the negative by the on-field umpire, but RoI got the decision overturned via the review. The very next ball, he castled Paras Dogra to leave J&K in trouble.
After the lunch break, the experienced Khajuria fell first ball, with Akash accounting for the wicket. Mukesh then ran through the rest of the batting unit as J&K lost their last seven wickets for a mere 22 runs. In fact, Mukesh bagged three wickets in a single over to wrap up the innings, with Sunil Kumar being the last batter dismissed. In the first innings, Mukesh Choudhary had bagged a five-for.
The cornerstone of RoI’s win, though, was R Smaran (68 and 135). The left-hand batter, known for his sound temperament, hauled RoI from a precarious 195 for 7 to 319 in the second innings. Even in the first innings, his fifty had propelled RoI to 237. J&K then took a vital lead of 41. They simply couldn’t find a way past one particular left-hand batter in the second innings.
