Chief National Coach Pullela Gopichand has shared his concerns about badminton’s new scoring system that could have a major impact on Indian players. He felt some might benefit due to it while others may struggle to adapt.

In an media interaction ahead of the World Championships, Gopichand recalled his own experience of adapting to a scoring change during his playing career. “When I won All England, a few months later, they moved from 15 to 7,” he mentioned. “ It took me time because I was one of those players who was a stroke player. I wanted time to get adjusted. It took me a year to come back.”

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has introduced the 15×3 format for the next season to replace the current 21×3 system. The changes are made to manage the players’ workload.

He added, “And then by the time I was kind of settling in, they brought us back to the long form and it was a death blow. Because you train, you detrain, and your endurance drops. Then to go back and play 15 was impossible. It definitely makes a big impact. A few players, it will wipe off, a few players might benefit.”

Gopichand also believes the new format will put more pressure on players to fine-tune their strategy. “You scoring points will be important, but you not giving away points will be even more important. The speed and the power and the focus need to be top notch. The mind will play much more,” he said.
