Ashwin Voices Fresh Concern Over India Selection Policy

Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has once again expressed concern over the way players are being handled by the selectors, citing Sanju Samson’s omission from the squad for the Zimbabwe tour as an example.

Ever since news of Samson’s exclusion from the T20I squad emerged, it has sparked a debate over how the selection committee’s ruthless approach could affect the team.

Ashwin was among the first to criticise Samson’s omission. For the second time in the space of a week, he addressed the issue.

“After those two losses in Ireland and the dip in form, they have made Sanju Samson sit out. Now, we have lost two in England. So, who is next? This is really wrong. I really hope the Indian cricketers don’t find themselves in an insecure position. I previously spoke about Suryakumar Yadav (dropping him from the squad). Players will become insular; they will start thinking about themselves more than the team. In T20 cricket, that is disastrous. If batters start thinking, ‘If I don’t score runs, I might be benched,’ then they will start playing for their places. That is extremely dangerous.”

Ashwin added that if Samson returns to the side and starts playing for himself, it would be difficult to blame him.

“Imagine this situation. Let’s say Sanju Samson is given an opportunity again. He might start thinking for himself. And you can’t even say that is wrong. I really hope they find a solution to this,” Ashwin added.

Samson is currently part of the Indian squad in England. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter missed the last two matches in Manchester and Nottingham. It remains to be seen whether he will be picked for the T20I in Bristol.
