Dilip Vengsarkar on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Tests: ‘Half-a-season or maybe a full season, you can’t wait for long’

Should Vaibhav Sooryavanshi be fast-tracked to the Indian team? The 2026 IPL saw the emergence of Indian cricket’s new star and who sort of redefined opening batting in T20 cricket. There’s a school of thought that Sooryavanshi could be a success in the longer format also and some former players have called for his inclusion in the Test side.

Dilip Vengsarkar, the former India captain, who also served as the chief selector, suggested that discretion could be the better part of valour.

“See, that’s where the expertise of your selectors comes to the fore,” said Vengsarkar at the book launch, ‘A Legend With Difference’ at BKC on Wednesday. The book is written by Sanjay Satam, Vengsarkar’s school mate.

Coming back to Sooryavanshi, the legendary former batsman said: “I mean, if you have to pick him for Test match cricket, I think there’s a big challenge because he’s good, he’s got potential, but how he performs in the longer format and in red-ball cricket, you have to wait and see.”

Then came the words of caution. “So maybe half-a-season or maybe a full season. You can’t wait for long, like, you know, two years or three years. Let him perform. It should be the case.”
