Ashoke Dinda, Sourav Sikdar among probable candidates to take over as Bengal Sports Minister

Left: Ashoke Dinda, Right: Sourav Sikdar ( PC-X)

Former India cricketer Ashoke Dinda and BJP state executive member Sourav Sikdar have emerged as the leading candidates to become the new Sports Minister of West Bengal. Dinda has been at the centre of political discussions, with many considering him a strong contender for the role. He won the Moyna Assembly Constituency seat in East Midnapore for the second consecutive time.

Sikdar is also in the race for the Sports Minister’s post. He has been associated with Southern Samity football club. He won from the North Dum Dum constituency, defeating Chandrima Bhattacharya of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The BJP leadership has spoken to both candidates, and a final meeting is scheduled for tonight, during which a decision is expected to be taken.

Other prominent names reportedly under consideration include former India hockey goalkeeper Bharath Chettri, who won from Kalimpong, along with Tapas Roy and Rakesh Tiwary.

The State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hierarchy, including State President Samik Bhattacharya, announced on Wednesday that the party will hold a legislative party meeting on Thursday. This will be followed by a swearing-in ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground on May 9 at 10 am. The ceremony will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior party leaders.

The BJP secured 206 out of 294 seats in West Bengal, a significant improvement over its tally of 77 seats in the 2021 Assembly elections. The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had swept the previous Assembly election by winning 212 seats, finished a distant second with 80 seats.
