Samarkand [Uzbekistan], September 28 (ANI): Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand presented the prestigious Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy to the Indian chess squad at the Chess Olympiad after yet another successful outing in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

It was the third consecutive edition in which India won the trophy, following its success at the 2022 Olympiad in Chennai and the 2024 edition in Budapest, where the country secured gold medals in both the Open and women’s sections. newsbetting.cv

The official X handle of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) posted, “India win the Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy! Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand presented the trophy to India for the best combined result across the Open and Women’s sections."

In the Open section, hosts Uzbekistan won the gold after defeating Ukraine 2.5-1.5 in the final round, while India settled for silver following a 2-2 draw against Hungary. Germany claimed bronze.

India and Germany finished level on 18 match points and 28.5 game points, with India taking the silver on the basis of its head-to-head result against Germany.

In the women’s section, China clinched gold after beating Vietnam 3-1, while Kazakhstan took silver. India secured bronze after drawing 2-2 against Georgia in the final round.

Savitha Shri played a crucial role for India by holding her position to secure a draw against Meri Arabidze, while Koneru Humpy registered a win on the top board.

India’s strong individual performances also contributed to its overall success. Savitha Shri won a gold medal, while Divya Deshmukh claimed silver and Vantika Agrawal and Koneru Humpy won bronze medals. In the Open section, D Gukesh took silver, and R Praggnanandhaa won bronze.

The Gaprindashvili Trophy, created by FIDE in 1997 and named after legendary Georgian player Nona Gaprindashvili, reflects a federation’s combined strength and depth across the two sections of the Olympiad. (ANI)

Asian Games: Men’s cricket, javelin, steeplechase headline India’s Day 9 schedule

Aichi-Nagoya [Japan], September 28 (ANI): A busy medal schedule awaits India on Monday as the men’s cricket team begins its Asian Games 2026 campaign, while Avinash Sable, Lovlina Borgohain, Manu Bhaker and several other leading athletes look to add to the country’s medal tally on Day 9 of the continental showpiece.

India, which ended Day 8 with 37 medals — four gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze — will begin its men’s cricket campaign at the quarter-final stage against Afghanistan at the Korogi Athletic Park, according to Olympics.com.

The defending champions will face the Hangzhou 2023 silver medallists, with India looking to continue its gold-medal run after defeating Afghanistan in the final three years ago.

Athletics will provide several medal opportunities for India, with nine finals featuring Indian athletes scheduled for the evening session.

Avinash Sable will be one of the biggest attractions as he returns to the 3000m steeplechase. The Hangzhou silver medallist is making his comeback from a long injury layoff and will look to challenge for a podium finish.

The men’s javelin throw will also be closely watched in the absence of defending champion Neeraj Chopra. Commonwealth Games medallist Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav will carry India’s challenge as they look to extend the country’s gold-medal streak in the event.

India has won the men’s javelin gold at the last two Asian Games through Chopra. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem are among the leading contenders in the event.

Hangzhou silver medallist Murali Sreeshankar and David Patturaj Solomon will compete in the men’s long jump, while Gulveer Singh will line up in the 1500m and Parul Chaudhary in the women’s 5000m. Both Gulveer and Parul have already won medals at the ongoing Games.

The athletics programme will also feature the women’s discus throw, men’s and women’s 400m hurdles and women’s 4x100m relay.

In boxing, Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will take on Republic of Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the women’s 75kg quarter-final. A victory would assure Lovlina of a medal. Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya are also one win away from securing podium finishes.

Shooting will see Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat compete in the women’s 25m pistol qualification, with Manu aiming to secure an individual medal in her final opportunity at the Games.

The squash competition moves into the team events, with singles finalists Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh looking to bounce back after their silver-medal finishes.

India’s archers will also be in action in the individual compound events, with Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Chikitha Taniparthi competing in the women’s draw, while Sahil Jadhav and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru will feature in the men’s competition.

In hockey, the Indian men’s team will face Bangladesh in its final Pool A match. Pincky Balhara will represent India in kurash, while volleyball and tennis competitions will also continue with the Indian contingent in action.

With several medal events lined up across athletics, boxing and shooting, India will look to turn a packed Day 9 schedule into another productive day after adding seven medals on Sunday. (ANI)

Asian Games: Ganesh Mani Ratnam beats compatriot Sahil Jadhav, enters compound archery quarterfinals

Aichi-Nagoya [Japan], September 28 (ANI): India’s Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru defeated compatriot Sahil Jadhav by a narrow 149-148 margin in the men’s compound individual round of 16 at the Asian Games here on Monday to enter the quarterfinals.

The all-Indian contest went down to the wire, with both archers maintaining a high level of accuracy before Ganesh edged ahead in the closing stages, according to ESPN.

Ganesh, who had earlier defeated Indonesia’s Sostar Andaru Rinaldi 144-142 in the round of 32, held his nerve to prevail over Jadhav and progress to the last eight.

He will face Chen Chieh-lun of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals on October 1.

Jadhav had also made a strong start to his individual campaign, defeating Mongolia’s Jamiyangombo Purevdorj 149-137 in the round of 32 before his run was ended by his Indian teammate.

The result means Ganesh is the lone Indian remaining in the men’s individual compound draw.

India’s archery contingent had already enjoyed a strong run in the team events at the Games, with all five Indian teams in action on Sunday progressing to the semifinals.

The men’s and women’s recurve teams, as well as the recurve mixed team, advanced to the last four, while the men’s and women’s compound teams also secured semifinal berths.

The compound individual competition will continue with the quarterfinals on October 1.

Elsewhere on Day 9, India’s Sivaraj Babu bowed out of the men’s shortboard surfing competition after losing 7.83-11.50 to the Philippines’ Alciso Jayuard in Round 3.

India’s men’s cricket team is also in action on Monday, taking on Afghanistan in the quarterfinal of the Asian Games. The defending champions entered the knockout stage directly and are looking to retain the gold medal won at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.

Several Indian athletes are also competing in medal events on Day 9, including Avinash Sable in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Murali Sreeshankar in the men’s long jump, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav in the men’s javelin throw, and Gulveer Singh in the men’s 1500m.

In boxing, Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain faces Republic of Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the women’s 75kg quarterfinal, while Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat compete in the women’s 25m pistol qualification in shooting. (ANI)

India Moves Into Asian Games Semi-Finals After Rain Washes Out Quarter-Final

India are through to the Asian Games semi-finals of the men’s cricket tournament. Their quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned because of rain. The match was called off 16 minutes before the toss. The outfield in Nisshin was too wet for play.

No ball was bowled. So the result was decided by seeding. India were the higher-seeded team. That came from their ICC T20I ranking. Afghanistan were the lower seed. So India advanced, and Afghanistan were eliminated.

This is the second Asian Games in a row where Afghanistan have exited because of a washout against India. In 2023 at Hangzhou, they reached the final. That match was also washed out. India were declared winners because they were the higher seed. Afghanistan had to settle for silver.

India will now play in the second semi-final on Thursday. Their opponent will be the winner of the Nepal vs Sri Lanka quarter-final. That match is on Tuesday. If that game is also washed out, Sri Lanka will go through. Sri Lanka are one of the four seeded teams. The others are India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Earlier on Monday, the first quarter-final between Hong Kong and Pakistan was also abandoned before the toss. Pakistan advanced because of their higher seeding.

So both of Monday’s quarter-finals were decided by rain, not cricket. India and Pakistan are now in the semi-finals. Afghanistan and Hong Kong are out. The tournament continues to be affected by bad weather in Japan.

Pakistan Advance After Rain Washes Out Quarter-Final Against Hong Kong

Pakistan are through to the Asian Games semi-finals of the men’s cricket event. Their quarter-final against Hong Kong was abandoned because of rain. Not a single ball was bowled. The match was called off at the toss. Heavy showers in Nisshin left the ground too wet for play. Much of the field stayed under covers all day.

With no result possible, the tournament rules decided the outcome. Pakistan were the higher-ranked team in the ICC rankings. So they moved on, and Hong Kong were knocked out.

Pakistan were one of the four seeded sides that went straight into the quarter-finals. The others were India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Hong Kong had to earn their place. They finished second in Group B. They beat Malaysia by eight wickets. They lost to Oman by 41 runs. That was enough to reach the last eight.

This match would have been the third T20I between Pakistan and Hong Kong. They had met twice before. Pakistan won both times. One was at the 2022 Asia Cup. The other was at the 2023 Asian Games.

Pakistan will now play in the semi-finals on Thursday. Their opponent will be the winner of the fourth quarter-final between Bangladesh and Malaysia. That match is also at risk of being affected by the weather.

Asian Games 2026: India and Pakistan Advance to Semi-Finals

The men’s cricket tournament at the Asian Games has been hit hard by rain. Two quarter-finals on September 28 were called off without a single ball being bowled. The first was Pakistan against Hong Kong. The second was India against Afghanistan.

In the India match, the toss had not even taken place. Officials stopped it 16 minutes before the scheduled start. The outfield was wet, and rain was still falling. Conditions never improved enough to play.

When a knockout match cannot be played, the tournament rules decide who moves on. The team with the higher ICC T20I ranking advances. Pakistan are ranked 6th, so they went through. India are ranked 1st, so they also advanced. Hong Kong and Afghanistan were eliminated.

The semi-finals are set for October 1. Pakistan will face the winner of Bangladesh vs Malaysia. That quarter-final has not been decided yet. India will play the winner of Sri Lanka vs Nepal. That match is also still pending.

The final and the bronze medal match will both be played on October 3.
