Pakistan cricket has long been known for its unpredictability, but in recent times, the drama has increasingly shifted from the pitch to the boardroom. This decline was evident during the second Test against England at Lord’s. The scorecard alone painted a grim picture. After England posted 248 in their first innings, Pakistan suffered a major batting collapse and were bowled out for just 110. With England quickly extending their lead in the second innings, Pakistan’s performance offered little indication of a team capable of fighting its way back into the contest.

However, it was the off-field drama during the same Test that attracted even more attention. On the opening day, Sky Sports aired an interview conducted by Michael Atherton with the sons of former Pakistan Prime Minister and cricket legend Imran Khan. Instead of allowing the focus to remain on the cricket, the PCB reportedly lodged a formal complaint and threatened that the Pakistan team would refuse to take the field after lunch if the interview was broadcast.

The broadcaster ultimately went ahead with the interview, while Pakistan returned to the field after the break. The episode once again raised questions about the effectiveness of such threats and the manner in which the PCB handles off-field issues.

This is not the first time Pakistan cricket has issued a threat of this nature.

During the 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE, Pakistan created another controversy ahead of their group-stage match against the UAE. The team management objected to the appointment of match referee Andy Pycroft over a previous grievance and demanded his removal. Pakistan even threatened to boycott the match if their demand was not accepted.

However, when the possibility of forfeiting the game became real, Pakistan backed down and took the field.

The same tournament produced another controversial episode after the final. Following India’s victory over Pakistan, the post-match presentation became a talking point after Indian players reportedly did not accept the trophy from PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi amid the ongoing political tensions and administrative disagreements between the two sides.

Naqvi subsequently left with the trophy, meaning the victorious Indian team did not receive the silverware during the official presentation.

Taken together, these episodes paint an increasingly uncomfortable picture of Pakistan cricket’s administration. Political tensions, personal disagreements and public threats have repeatedly taken attention away from what should remain at the centre of the sport — the cricket itself.

Pakistan remain a team capable of producing extraordinary cricketers and unforgettable moments. But for that legacy to remain intact, the administration must find a way to keep the focus on performances rather than controversies.

Until then, the biggest headlines surrounding Pakistan cricket may continue to come from the boardroom rather than the boundary rope.

India began their Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026 campaign with a dominant 94-run victory over Thailand in Dubai on Sunday. Shafali Verma’s aggressive 64 and a brilliant spell from Deepti Sharma helped the seven-time champions start the tournament in style.

India posted 159 for 9 after being asked to bat. Thailand were then bowled out for just 65 in 16.1 overs.

Shafali Verma played a sparkling innings at the top of the order. She smashed 64 off 36 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes. The opener reached her fifty in just 26 balls and looked set to take India beyond 200.

Smriti Mandhana also started brightly, scoring 19 off 10 balls before being run out following a sharp direct hit. The opening pair added 38 runs in just three overs.

Debutant Pratika Rawal, playing in place of the injured Jemimah Rodrigues, contributed a useful 22 off 18 balls. At the halfway stage, India were cruising at 101 for 2.

Thailand spinners trigger India’s middle-order collapse

Thailand’s spinners then fought back strongly. Suleeporn Laomi was the standout bowler, finishing with 3 for 26. She removed Pratika before claiming the crucial wickets of Shafali and Richa Ghosh in successive deliveries.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur fell cheaply for 5, and India lost four wickets for just 21 runs. Off-spinner Sunida Chaturongrattana also picked up two wickets as India’s middle and lower order struggled.

India slipped to 137 for 9 before Kranti Gaud struck an unbeaten 15 off eight balls to push the total beyond 150. India eventually finished on 159 for 9.

Deepti Sharma produces match-winning spell

Thailand’s chase never got going. Seamers Kranti Gaud and Nandani Sharma removed both openers inside the first four overs, while left-arm spinner Sree Charani then struck twice in quick succession.

Deepti Sharma, playing her 150th T20I, produced a match-winning spell. She first took two wickets in the ninth over to leave Thailand reeling at 44 for 6.

She returned later and claimed another wicket with her first ball, finishing with three wickets in just seven deliveries without conceding a run.

With those wickets, Deepti went past Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong to become the leading wicket-taker in women’s T20I cricket with 171 scalps. She is also only the third Indian woman after Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana to play 150 T20Is.

Nannapat offers resistance but Thailand fall short

Nannapat Koncharoenkai offered some resistance with 41, but it was never going to be enough to keep Thailand in the contest.

Thailand were eventually bowled out for 65 in 16.1 overs as India completed a comprehensive victory.

Despite the late batting collapse, India completed a comfortable win and collected two points from Group A. They will next face Hong Kong on Thursday.

For Thailand, this was their first defeat of the tournament after they had earlier beaten Hong Kong by six runs.

They both faced the deliveries of Ayush Goyal, Nipun Pandita, Manpreet Johal and Ramandeep Singh who provided Mohali with their first breakthrough at 5.1, with Nipun taking the catch to dismiss Dhawan for 45.

However, Abhishek continued to smash boundaries as he brought up his half-century in just 17 balls before eventually falling for a stunning 77 off 26 deliveries. Harpreet Brar’s delivery dismissed Abhishek and his innings included six fours and seven sixes, as he struck at an extraordinary strike rate of 296.15.

This stellar opening partnership ultimately provided the perfect platform for Amritsar Soormas, with Abhishek and Dhawan’s 100-run stand coming in just 31 balls and setting up a dominant start to their Sher-E-Punjab T20 campaign. While the Soormas did eventually fall short against Mohali Kings despite the explosive start, the opening partnership remained one of the brightest moments in the campaign opener.

In the post-match comments, Abhishek also acknowledged that his side was only a few runs short of what could have been a winning total, and he further added that it was unusual for a captain on that pitch to feel that even 260 runs was not enough.

For Dhawan, the opening game of the new Sher-E-Punjab T20 season was an opportunity to make an impression of his own, and accumulating 45 runs from just 17 balls at the end of five overs was a statement of intent from a young opener.

Amritsar Soormas posted 258 all out in 19.5 overs, but Mohali Kings chased down the target in 19.3 overs to win by five wickets.

On Sunday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) gagged its players from speaking about Imran Khan. Hours later, following another humiliating Test defeat, it pressed the panic button.

Pakistan lost the second Test against England at Lord’s by 194 runs, following their innings defeat in the first Test at Headingley. Now, according to sources, the PCB has asked Pakistan’s white-ball coach, Mike Hesson, to take charge of the red-ball team for the final Test of the series as well. The final Test will be played at Edgbaston from September 9, with Hesson set to take over from incumbent Pakistan Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed.

In addition, six players, including Saim Ayub and Arafat Minhas, have reportedly been called up to reinforce the squad for the final Test. Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq have been sent back, with form and fitness respectively cited as the reasons.

Imam, after being ruled out of the second Test with an injury, came in for criticism from several quarters. He was even accused of faking his injury. On Day 4, after the batter was seen doing some knocking on the sidelines with tape over his left calf, former England fast bowler Stuart Broad let it rip.

“That’s all for show. He has got a bit of stick from the media and maybe his team-mates. Whatever. You can do that inside the indoor school without anyone seeing, don’t have to come wearing shorts and tape and hobble around like that. I am not impressed with that. Sorry,” Broad said on Sky Sports.

Pakistan cricket has long been associated with controversies and drama. But even by their standards, a mid-series change of head coach is unprecedented. According to sources, Hesson was asked to check in at Lord’s even before the second Test was over.
