New York [US], July 6 (ANI): Norway head coach Stale Solbakken praised his team’s unity and togetherness after the Scandinavian nation reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals for the first time in its history with a memorable victory over Brazil, according to Reuters.
Norway stunned five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16, with Erling Haaland scoring twice to send his side into the last eight.
Reflecting on the team’s success, Solbakken said the squad’s close bond had been central to its achievements.
“This is a great group, they love being together, they train well, they help each other and protect each other. We have a strong culture and we give the opportunity to let people be themselves and say whatever they want, and that’s a very important part of the whole thing, when things go well and when things go not so well," Solbakken told reporters, as quoted by Reuters.
The Norway coach said the team’s success had united supporters across the country.
“I think that the whole nation is rowing together, and with that, I mean that we are having a great party here and in Oslo and in all the other big and small cities all the way through Norway," he said.
“The rowing is in a way a symbol of that, and that we are all together. So I think it’s great days, it’s a great summer to be a fan — I think it’s better to be a fan than a coach," he added.
Brazil dominated large spells of the match and missed a first-half penalty through Bruno Guimaraes, while Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland produced a string of crucial saves.

‘We Belong Here’: Pico Lopes Reflects on Cabo Verde’s Historic World Cup
A small island with a big heart – that perhaps describes Cape Verde, or Cabo Verde, perfectly. A small island nation off the west coast of Africa with a population of just over 500,000, they most recently shocked the football world by taking on the giants of the game on its biggest stage.
After a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to reigning world champions Argentina, Cabo Verde bowed out of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. Yet the memories they have created will be cherished by football fans for generations to come.
Over the years, we’ve witnessed several iconic underdog stories at the World Cup – Cameroon in 1990, when a 38-year-old Roger Milla inspired them to become the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals; Croatia finishing runners-up in 2018; and Morocco becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals in 2022.
But this Cabo Verde story feels different. They arrived at the World Cup as one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for football’s biggest stage, with a population of just half a million. As they leave, however, they have gained millions more as admirers across the globe. Whether it’s captain Pico Lopes being recruited through LinkedIn or 41-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha standing tall between the posts throughout the tournament, every story has been an inspiration.
After the match against Argentina, there was obvious heartbreak among the players, who had given everything against the defending champions. But as life moved on, Pico reflected on their remarkable campaign. Special thanks to OTS Media for facilitating this conversation with Pico, who shared his thoughts on Cabo Verde’s World Cup journey.
“Obviously, we’re disappointed to see it come to an end,” he said. “It’s still quite fresh, so it’s hurting a little bit, but when it settles, we’ll realise what we achieved here and what we managed to do.”
What made Cabo Verde’s campaign special was that it wasn’t just a “token gesture” for them.
“We came here on the biggest stage in world football, we competed and we showed that we belong here,” he said. “We deserved our place here on merit, and we wanted to compete. There’s a phrase that’s gone around which I love: ‘We’re a small island, but we have a big heart.’
“I think we’ve shown that in all of our games,” he added.
Legends like Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimović, working on the tournament broadcasts, were full of praise for Cabo Verde’s campaign.
“The surreal thing for me is hearing people like that talking about Cabo Verde players,” he said. “We grew up watching and talking about Henry and Ibrahimović, and now these big stars know where we are and what we’re about.
“This World Cup has given us the opportunity to show who we are as people as well as footballers.”
Holding Spain to a draw in their opening game was special. Repeating that feat against Uruguay after scoring twice made it even more remarkable. But sharing the pitch with Lionel Messi and Argentina, and pushing the reigning champions to the brink in a knockout match, will be remembered for years to come. There was even a brief exchange between Lopes and Messi as the two walked towards the tunnel at half-time.
“There wasn’t much, really,” he said, describing the conversation. “I think he took exception to a little push I gave him. I just wanted to make sure he stayed in front of me because we’d seen what he could do if he got in behind.”
“He basically said, ‘That’s a foul, you pushed me off the ball,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I know, but I had to keep you there,’” he continued. “We spoke about it on the way into half-time, had a handshake, a little laugh and then got on with it.”
Sharing the same pitch with one of football’s greatest players was special, he admits. But once the game begins, everyone is equal.
“It’s 11 versus 11.”
“We got our opportunities and just fell a few minutes short of potentially forcing penalties,” he said. “It wasn’t to be, but we’ll take a lot from the experience.”

Australia restricted England to 150 after electing to bowl and then chased down the target in 17.1 overs with Beth Mooney leading the way, scoring 64 runs, according to a release.

Australia recovered quickly after losing opener Georgia Voll in the second over, with Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield adding a match-defining partnership that powered the side to 62/1 at the end of the powerplay before taking them beyond the 100-run mark in the 11th over.
Litchfield made a fluent 48, while Mooney registered her ninth Women’s T20 World Cup half-century before Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner completed the chase.
Earlier, Australia’s disciplined bowling attack restricted England to 150/4 despite an unbeaten 58 from captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and 44 from Freya Kemp.
