Martinez Faces Ronaldo Dilemma as Portugal Prepare for Spain Showdown

Portugal’s Round of 32 victory over Croatia was followed by an emotional tribute as the players remembered Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a road accident a year ago today. Once those emotions settle, however, Roberto Martinez and Portugal’s coaching staff will be left with some uncomfortable decisions before their next game against Spain. cricket-ipl.co.za

Spain swept into the last 16 with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Austria, a margin that could easily have been greater. Portugal cannot afford to be as sloppy as they were for long spells against Croatia.

The spotlight will inevitably fall once again on Cristiano Ronaldo, who ended his World Cup knockout-stage scoring drought at the ninth attempt with a 69th-minute penalty. The bigger question, though, is whether he offers enough as the lone striker in the system Portugal favour.

It was telling that two of the first players Martinez substituted were Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha. Vitinha was instrumental in Paris Saint-Germain’s back-to-back UEFA Champions League triumphs, while Fernandes has just come off a Premier League season in which he set a single-season assists record. Both players thrive when they have willing runners ahead of them. Vitinha can pick out the pace of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué at club level, while many of Fernandes’ assists have been converted by Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško and Matheus Cunha.

Despite ending his drought, Ronaldo still does not provide the kind of mobile focal point that allows Portugal’s midfield to flourish. The Independent‘s headline after the draw against DR Congo – “10 men and a statue” – may have been harsh, but it reflected the concern that Portugal’s attack can become static with him leading the line.

Gonçalo Ramos scored a superb winner after coming on against Croatia, strengthening his case for a start. There should also be no question about Rafael Leão’s place in the starting XI after his starring role in the win against Croatia.

Spain have yet to concede a goal at this World Cup and have allowed the fewest high-quality chances of any team in the competition. To break them down, Portugal will need far more imagination, greater creativity and much quicker ball circulation than they have shown so far.

Back in 2022, Fernando Santos famously benched Ronaldo for the Round of 16 against Switzerland and was rewarded with a 6-1 victory. The move did not work against Morocco in the quarter-finals, but Martinez must now decide whether he has the courage to make a similarly bold call and start Ramos against Spain. Or will the weight of Ronaldo’s stature and the inevitable social media reaction persuade him to stick with the veteran, who, in truth, has looked short of his best against the stronger opponents Portugal have faced in this tournament?

  • Navigate to the official Garena Rewards Redemption Site.
  • Log in using the platform linked to your Free Fire account (Facebook, Google, Apple ID, or X). Guest accounts are ineligible for rewards.
  • Copy one of the 12 to 16-character codes from the list above and paste it into the text field.
  • Click the “Confirm” button. A pop-up will notify you if the redemption was successful.
  • Once verified, the items will be sent to your in-game mailbox within 24 hours.

Players should act quickly, as these codes typically have a short validity window of 12 to 18 hours. Additionally, many codes are region-locked, meaning they will only work for players on specific servers (such as India). If a code doesn’t work, it is likely because the server limit has been reached or the time has lapsed. Keep an eye out for daily updates to ensure you never miss out on these stylish upgrades!

Sri Lanka lose 4 players to injuries, illness before WI vs SL 2nd Test, pace unit worst hit

Sri Lanka Cricket team are in big trouble as four players have been ruled out of the WI vs SL 2nd Test which is set to commence from July 3 (Friday). Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Ramesh Mendis and Pathum Nissanka are all out of the second Test in Antigua due to injury or illness. Sri Lanka are already 0-1 down in the series, having suffered an innings and 217-run defeat in the 1st Test. Now, the visitors will have to pick their playing XI from a 13-member squad instead of the initial 17-member group that was announced earlier.

Sri Lanka in big trouble ahead of WI vs SL 2nd Test

As per a press release issued by SLC, Lahiru Kumara is unavailable for selection for the WI vs SL 2nd Test as he is undergoing rehabilitation after sustaining a Grade 1 strain to his right hamstring. Fernando experienced a recurrence of right-sided lower back, trunk, and hip pain while bowling in the warm-up match. While he has shown improvement, he is yet to completely recover and hence, has been ruled out of the tie. Mendis contracted a bacterial infection during the tour and is yet to completely recover.

Meanwhile, Nissanka has travelled to the UK for a wrist surgery and will miss the 2nd Test. He struggled in the first West Indies Test, scoring 2 and 3 runs, and has decided to pull out of the tour. Nissanka is all but certain to miss the Lankan Premier League (LPL) and is also doubtful for the two-match Test series against India which will begin from August 15 onwards.

Isitha Wijesundara is expected to make his Test debut in the WI vs SL 2nd Test, given the number of injuries that the team has suffered. As per Cricinfo, Prabath Jayasuriya – Sri Lanka’s top specialist spinner over the last three years – will enter the XI.
