Asian Games: India stun South Korea to win historic women’s recurve archery gold

Aichi-Nagoya [Japan], October 2 (ANI): India produced a stunning upset in women’s recurve archery as Kumkum Mohod, Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma defeated South Korea 5-3 in the gold medal match at the Asian Games 2026 on Friday to claim the country’s first-ever medal in the discipline at the continental showpiece.

The Indian trio held their nerve against the dominant South Korean side, with 17-year-old Kumkum emerging as the star of the final and delivering two crucial 10s in the closing stages to seal a historic victory, according to ESPN.

India, competing in their first-ever recurve women’s team final at the Asian Games, were up against a South Korean side that has traditionally dominated the discipline. The Koreans had three archers in the top four of the qualification rankings, while India’s three finalists had finished 10th, 20th and 25th.

But India made the perfect start to the final.

South Korea posted 54 in the opening set, but India matched the score after Ankita began with a 9, Kirti followed with a 7 and Kumkum produced a 10 under pressure to force a 1-1 split.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with both teams finishing on 56. Ankita struck two 10s while Kumkum again delivered a 10 with her final arrow to ensure India remained level at 2-2.

India then made the decisive move in the third set.

Kirti opened with a 10, Ankita added a 9 and Kumkum followed with another 9 to give India a one-point lead after the first rotation. South Korea faltered in the second rotation, with all three archers recording 8s, leaving them on 51.

India needed only 24 points from their final three arrows to win the set. Kirti managed an 8, Ankita added a 9 and Kumkum produced another 10 to give India a 55-51 set victory and a 4-2 lead.

With the gold medal within reach, India faced another nervy final set.

South Korea responded with a strong opening rotation, scoring 28 to take a two-point advantage. India began their response with a 9 from Kirti and Ankita added another 9, leaving Kumkum needing a perfect 10 to level the set at 54 and secure the gold.

The teenager delivered once again.

Kumkum’s 10 gave India the required 28 points, tying the fourth set and handing them a 5-3 victory in the final.

The gold also marked India’s first-ever medal in the women’s recurve team event at the Asian Games.

Kumkum, from Maharashtra, was instrumental throughout the final, repeatedly producing 10s when India needed them most, while Ankita’s experience helped steady the team during crucial moments.

Earlier in the day, India had defeated China 5-1 in the semifinal to set up the final against South Korea.

The victory is India’s 11th gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and takes their overall tally to 67 medals, including 23 silver and 33 bronze, with India seventh on the medal table at the time of writing.

India’s recurve archers will have two more opportunities for medals later on Friday. Kumkum and Dhiraj Bommadevara will compete in the mixed team semifinal against Japan, while Dhiraj, Neeraj Chauhan and Yashdeep Bhoge will face Iran in the men’s team semifinal.

The mixed recurve team event also carries an Olympic qualification incentive, with the winning National Olympic Committee set to earn one men’s and one women’s quota for the LA 2028 Olympics. (ANI)

UEFA Nations League: Portugal beat Denmark 4-2 to maintain perfect start without Ronaldo

Copenhagen [Denmark], October 2 (ANI): Defending champions Portugal continued their perfect start to the UEFA Nations League with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Denmark in Group A4 on Thursday (local time), overcoming the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo to secure a third straight win.

Goncalo Ramos scored twice, while Vitinha and Joao Felix were also on target as Portugal extended their impressive run to just one defeat in their last 13 matches, according to the website of UEFA Nations League.

The pre-match focus had largely been on Ronaldo’s omission, but Portugal quickly put any concerns aside as they took the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour.

Ramos had struck the post moments earlier before combining with Joao Cancelo, who broke through the Danish defence and calmly finished past goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Denmark responded in the 23rd minute when Joakim Maehle’s cut-back found Mikkel Damsgaard, who curled a fine effort into the far corner to restore parity.

Portugal regained the advantage just three minutes later. Bruno Fernandes picked out Ramos, who kept his composure to send a low finish beyond Hermansen for his second international goal in four days.

The visitors continued to threaten before the break, with Nuno Mendes firing wide and Hermansen denying Ramos from close range.

Denmark came out strongly after half-time and levelled again in the 53rd minute. Damsgaard turned provider, releasing Rasmus Hojlund, who lifted a superb finish over the advancing Diogo Costa.

Hojlund then celebrated with Ronaldo’s trademark ‘Siuuu’ celebration, adding another talking point to an already eventful contest.

Portugal responded by increasing the pressure, but Hermansen kept Denmark in the contest with saves from Ramos and Ruben Neves.

The visitors finally restored their lead for a third time in the 67th minute. Fernandes delivered a dangerous ball into the area and Vitinha rose highest to head Portugal in front.

With Denmark chasing another equaliser, Portugal managed the closing stages effectively before adding a fourth goal.

Joao Felix completed the scoring after being introduced from the bench, sweeping home from Diogo Dalot’s pass to seal a memorable away victory for Jorge Jesus’ side.

The win leaves Portugal top of Group A4 with three victories from three matches, while Denmark will have to regroup after surrendering the lead twice.

Denmark, ranked 21st in the FIFA rankings, have now been beaten by seventh-ranked Portugal, who have strengthened their position at the summit of the group. (ANI)

Asian Games: ‘She wanted to change the colour of her medal,’ says Lovlina’s father after historic gold

Golaghat (Assam) [India], October 2 (ANI): Veteran Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain’s father Tiken Borgohain was overjoyed after his daughter clinched her maiden Asian Games gold medal on her 29th birthday, saying the champion had worked tirelessly to change the colour of the silver she won at the previous edition.

Lovlina defeated China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 in the women’s 75kg final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Friday to celebrate her birthday with the continental title.

Speaking after her triumph, Tiken said the family was delighted to see Lovlina’s hard work and determination culminate in gold.

“We are absolutely delighted and overjoyed because she won the final today. Today also happens to be her birthday. This is her first Asian Games gold medal. She has worked incredibly hard. She had spoken about winning this gold. She had previously won a silver medal and wanted to change its colour. So seeing that color change now feels wonderful. I am very happy, and on her behalf, I want to thank all my fellow countrymen. So many people prayed for this, and I am deeply grateful to everyone," Lovlina’s father told ANI.

Lovlina, who had won silver in the 75kg category at the Hangzhou Asian Games, produced a composed performance against Bao in the final.

The Chinese boxer started aggressively and threw a flurry of punches in the opening round, but Lovlina stayed patient and landed effective counter punches to edge the round 3-2.

Bao continued to press in the second round, but Lovlina appeared more confident and landed the cleaner punches. She took the round 4-1 to establish a 2-0 lead.

The Indian maintained her strategy in the final round, allowing Bao to come forward while looking for counter-punching opportunities. She was awarded the round unanimously to complete a 5-0 victory.

The gold capped a strong campaign for Lovlina, who had earlier defeated Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a split decision in the semifinal. The victory made her the first Indian woman boxer to reach consecutive Asian Games finals.

Born on October 2, 1997, in Assam’s Golaghat district, Lovlina has also won a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and became world champion in the women’s 75kg category in 2023.

She had earlier won gold at the 2022 Asian Championships and silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Her achievements have also earned her the Arjuna Award in 2020 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021.

Lovlina’s gold took India’s medal tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games to 70, including 12 gold, 24 silver and 34 bronze. (ANI)
