Tuchel says Czech Republic game 'not yet a must-win'

England coach Thomas Tuchel said Monday the upcoming Nations League game against the Czech Republic in Prague was "not yet a must-win" despite a 3-2 loss to Spain last weekend.

Reigning world champions Spain came back from 2-1 down in an entertaining Group A3 opener at Wembley on Saturday, denting England's hopes of reaching their second-ever Nations League semi-final.

"It's a bit early in the group for a must-win," Tuchel, who led England to the third spot at the World Cup, told reporters in Prague.

"In general we always arrive at every match and prepare the team with a target to win... it was the target against Spain and it's the target tomorrow," he added.

"You always need a result in football to get confidence and to get the support and to get the belief you always need. Especially after a defeat."

He said he expected a tough opposition from the Czechs who had hired their first-ever foreign coach, Santi Denia of Spain, in the summer after finishing last in their World Cup group.

The Czechs also got off to a stumbling start in the other Group A3 game on Saturday as they lost to Croatia 2-1 at home despite showing some improvement to their game under the new coach.

"We respect the opposition, we respect the quality, we respect the challenge that it brings if you play in Prague against Czechia," said Tuchel.

The former Chelsea manager said Ezri Konsa and Nico O'Reilly, who both started against Spain, had "minor issues" that may rule them out on Tuesday.

"Ideally I would love to put the same team out there, but I need to speak with doctors, physios and the players themselves," said Tuchel.

"My mindset before the camp was to not rotate too much," added the German coach. "But we will always be very considerate with the health of the players."

The Three Lions have only reached a Nations League semi-final once out of three editions and were even relegated to the second tier in the 2022/23 campaign.

The Czechs have not lost any of their last four home games against England, and they won the last encounter 2-1 in a Euro 2020 qualifier in Prague in 2019.

But they will face a mammoth task as a team in the making under Denia, who had guided Spain to 2024 Olympic gold.

Hailing England as "one of the best teams in the world" Denia said the hosts would focus on their game.

"We are focused on our development to improve our performance and to improve our details with our team," Denia said.

Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket semifinals: All quarterfinals washed out, Team India opponent finalized

Asian Games 2026: The four semifinalists in the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket event have been decided without a single ball being bowled in the quarterfinal matches over the last two days. Just like Monday when India and Pakistan booked their place in the last thanks to rain leading to wash-outs, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have joined them in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka were set to face Nepal in the third quarterfinal while Bangladesh were taking on Malaysia in the fourth semifinal game at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Tuesday. But both these matches were abandoned without a ball getting bowled, just like the first two quarterfinal matches on Monday.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have now progressed into the men’s cricket semifinals, according to the rules and regulations in the Asian Games 2026. In case of a wash-out where the winner cannot be determined, the higher seeded team – in this case Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – will progress into the semifinals.

Shreyas Iyer’s Team India will now take on Sahan Arachchige-led Sri Lanka in the second semifinal match at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Thursday, October 1. The first semifinal will be a clash against Pakistan and Bangladesh and the winners of both these matches will be assured of at least a silver medal.

What will happen if Asian Games 2026 semifinal are washed out as well?

While the weather prediction for Nisshin for later this week looks much brighter, but the fans will be wondering who will progress into the gold medal match if the Asian Games 2026 semifinals are also washed out by rain.

The rules at the Asian Games 2026 state that once again the higher seeded team will march into the gold medal match if the semifinals are washed out or abandoned due to rain and wet weather. India are the number one seed and by this right, they will progress into the semifinal if their match on Thursday is abandoned.

Pakistan are also the higher seed as compared to Bangladesh due to their T20I rankings which determined their seedings. If the first semifinal is washed out due to rain, then Pakistan will enter the gold medal match set to take place on Saturday, October 3.

Who will win gold medal if Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket final is washed out?

There is a major change in Asian Games 2026 rules as compared to the 2023 edition in Hangzhou. In Asian Games 2023, Team India had won the gold medal when their final against Afghanistan was washed out due to rain.

But in 2026 edition, if rain or wet weather washes out the gold medal match on Saturday, then both the finalists will get the gold medal. The same scenario will take place in the bronze medal match on Saturday morning as well.
